Engraving on paper

Approximately 20.5 × 20.5 in.

A large 18th-century engraving depicting The Liberation of Saint Peter from Prison, published in the second volume of the celebrated Royal Gallery of Dresden series.

The plate identifies the original composition as a work of Jusepe de Ribera, called Lo Spagnoletto. Modern Dresden scholarship attributes the underlying painting to a follower of Ribera.

Drawn by Pierre Hutin and engraved by Marco Alvise Pitteri in Venice. Inscribed in Italian and French beneath the image. Plate II, No. 34.

Condition: Visible age-related staining, principally along the lower and right portions of the sheet, with additional signs of age, handling and mounting. The engraved image remains strong and highly detailed. Please refer to photographs.

Circa 1757.
