Imperial Russian .84 Silver Decanter by Ignaty Sazikov

St. Petersburg, ca. 1860

Description

A rare Imperial Russian .84 silver decanter by Ignaty Sazikov, produced in St. Petersburg circa 1860, during the height of Russia’s Imperial silver tradition.

The decanter is executed in a tall rectangular flask form with canted corners, fully chased with a scaled pattern and centered by a rectangular medallion engraved in Cyrillic script. The sculptural stopper is surmounted by a cloaked standing figure drinking from a flask, a narrative detail characteristic of Sazikov’s Neo-Russian genre silver.

This is a museum-grade example of Imperial Russian silver, created by one of the most important court silversmiths of the 19th century.

Maker: Ignaty Sazikov

Ignaty Sazikov assumed leadership of the Sazikov firm following the death of his father, Pavel Fedorovich Sazikov, and expanded operations from Moscow into St. Petersburg, transforming the firm into one of Imperial Russia’s most celebrated silver workshops.

The Sazikov firm became official supplier to the Imperial Court in 1846, was awarded the Gold Medal at the Great Exhibition of London in 1851, and received the Légion d’Honneur at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1867. Sazikov silver is represented in major museum collections and serious private holdings worldwide.
